Spermatogenesis and Sperm Maturation in Male Poultry: Targets for Improving Male Reproductive Performance1

چکیده

Spermatogenesis and sperm maturation are complex processes which are affected by a myriad of endocrine, paracrine and neural factors. In birds, regulation of testicular and excurrent duct growth, maturation and function are only poorly understood. As the quality and quantity of sperm produced may be altered at any of several points during sexual maturation, spermatogenesis or during extragonadal sperm maturation, understanding these processes could have profound effects on male reproductive performance. In this paper, the effects of transient prepubertal hypothyroidism on adult testis size and sperm production, as well as the effects of the sperm degeneration allele on sperm function, will be discussed. These two models strongly suggest that male reproductive performance can be altered during development, positively by increasing sperm production via transient hypothyroidism and negatively by altering the pattern of excurrent duct differentiation and, ultimately, function. In the future, breeders may be able to exploit the genetic components of these traits to increase the reproductive capacity of breeder males.

The role of molecular chaperones in spermatogenesis and the post-testicular maturation of mammalian spermatozoa.

BACKGROUND Spermatogenesis culminates in production of one of the most highly differentiated cells in biology, the spermatozoon. The gametes that emerge from the testes are, however, functionally immature and only acquire full functionality once they have completed a process of post-testicular maturation in the epididymis and female reproductive tract. Remarkably, this acquisition of sperm func...

Baculo-expression and enzymatic characterization of CES7 esterase.

The male reproductive tracts in different species are characterized by similar patterns of male-dependent overexpression of carboxylesterases. This phenomenon indicates male sex-associated functions of these enzymes for spermatogenesis, sperm maturation, and sperm use. Recently, a novel epididymis-specific gene named Ces7 was cloned and characterized, which belongs to the carboxylesterase famil...

Origin and biological significance of DNA fragmentation in human spermatozoa.

The occurrence of DNA fragmentation in mammalian spermatozoa was identified in 1993. In human, sperm DNA fragmentation is particularly relevant in subfertile patients (i.e, those subjects more likely to be treated by assisted reproductive techniques). Thus, concerns have been raised about the possibility that sperm with DNA fragmentation may be involved in the process of fertilization, in parti...

Potential biological role of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) in male gametes

Maintaining the integrity of sperm DNA is vital to reproduction and male fertility. Sperm contain a number of molecules and pathways for the repair of base excision, base mismatches and DNA strand breaks. The presence of Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP), a DNA repair enzyme, and its homologues has recently been shown in male germ cells, specifically during stage VII of spermatogenesis. High ...

Functions of essential nutrition for high quality spermatogenesis

The process of sperm production is well understood, but the studies of essential nutritional elements which are necessary for successful spermatogenesis are not deeply studied as yet. Our review focuses on integrating available information of various nutritional elements involved in spermatogenesis, sperm maturation and male reproductive system development, such as Zinc, Selenium, Folate, Vitam...
